A Strong Dose of Reality
We all dream of having perfect family photos, where everyone is smiling and dressed nice.
Usually just before Thanksgiving we start thinking of what outfits we’re going to wear and how they will coordinate with each other. I dream of gorgeous locations, just before sunset when the light will be perfect and glowing. As a mother of two young boys and a wife to a husband who travels a lot, I know that this will be a hard sale. They like their down time, they like to chill. When we are home together the last thing any of them want to do is get dressed up and be my muses. Also for me, the stress of screaming “Just smile nice Dammit” isn’t my idea of a fun time spent with family.
This year I decided to go a different direction with our Christmas photos. I decided to go with a strong dose of reality.
With the hubby home from a trip and a healthy pour of scotch in his glass, content sitting on the couch reading the news on my iPad, I had a brilliant idea. I was fresh out of the shower and thought, this is perfect. My 11 year old sprawled out on the loveseat in his usual spot, cozy in his tattered bathrobe that is now too small for him. My 9 year old in his standard spot on the couch plugged into his iPhone, playing some stupid game while listening to music on his earphones nearly naked, I said this is perfect. I immediately went back to my office and grabbed my camera. There was no time to apply makeup or try to fix my hair, and that wouldn’t have been an honest move anyways. If we’re talking reality here and the mood I wanted to capture it had to be done that very second.
I returned with camera in hand and nobody noticed. I gently set the camera on the entertainment center next to our tv and plopped down on the couch next to my husband. “Click”. No one moved. I got up and grabbed the camera and sat back down. My husband looks away from reading the news for a moment and gives me a suspicious glare. My oldest son asks “mom, whatcha doing”? I said CHRISTMAS PICTURES!!
So here you have it….. The Raw, the Real , The Genuine, The Authentic.
From my family to yours.
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year
